				Title : Optimum field requirements and farm planning for mechanical harvest of sugar cane in Mauritius
				Year of publication : 1995
				Keywords : SUGARCANE; MECHANICAL HARVESTING; FARM PLANNING; MECHANIZATION; MSIRI STAFF; MECHAN; MAURITIUS;
				Citation : Seeruttun, S.; Jacquin, E.; Optimum field requirements and farm planning for mechanical harvest of sugar cane in Mauritius; 1995
								Abstract : Farm planning is necessary to increase the area under sugar cane which can be harvested mechanically and to enable the harvesters to perform efficiently. The optimum field requirements of the cane harvesters in operation in Mauritius have been identified and include fields with slopes of up to 12 per cent and a minimum cane row length of 200m. Derocking and levelling of soil surface and design of soil conservation measures are important factors to be considered. An approach to farm planning for mechanical harvesting of sugar cane has been proposed and relates the machine requirements to the existing fields and identifies the land improvement and soil conservation measures needed.

				Title : A practical formula for calculating the weight of filtered juice
				Year of publication : 1995

				Citation : Kong Win Chang, K. T. K. F.; A practical formula for calculating the weight of filtered juice; 1995
								Abstract : A formula is derived for calculating the weight of filtered juice using the weight of mixed juice, Brix of filtered juice and the mixture of mixed juice and filtered juice. An estimation of filtered juice weight could be obtained using the Brix of clarified juice instead of the Brix of the mixture of mixed juice and filtered juice in the formula.

				Title : A note on the performance and characteristics of the newly-recommended potato variety Stirling
				Year of publication : 1995
				Keywords : POTATOES; VARIETIES; YIELDS; INTERCROPPING; BREEDING; PROCESSING; FRENCH FRIES; CRISPS; MSIRI STAFF; FC; MAURITIUS;
				Citation : Wong Yen Cheong, K.; Govinden, N.; A note on the performance and characteristics of the newly-recommended potato variety Stirling; 1995
								Abstract : Stirling, a newly imported potato variety, originating from Scotland has been recommended for commercial planting. This variety has been under test from 1992 to 1994 in the current MSIRI programme of screening foreign varieties. It gave 9 per cent and 29 per cent higher marketable yield (tubers50 g) than Spunta in the first and second seasons, respectively. It is as tolerant as Spunta to late blight but more susceptible to bacterial wilt. Tuber dry matter content is rather low making the variety unsuitable for processing into French fries or crisps.

				Title : Weed control in direct seeded and transplanted onion
				Year of publication : 1995
				Keywords : ONIONS; WEEDS; WEED CONTROL; CHEMICAL WEED CONTROL; MECHANICAL WEED CONTROL; MSIRI STAFF; COWA; MAURITIUS;
				Citation : Mc Intyre, G.; Barbe, C.; Weed control in direct seeded and transplanted onion; 1995
								Abstract : Mauritius has two methods of producing onion: by small bulbs or by the transplantation of seedlings. Both methods are labour intensive and costly. Trials comparing direct-seeded to transplanted onion had two main objectives: to evaluate different weed control scenarios and compare crop yield. It was found that direct seeded was far better than transplanted onion because of a better yield, a lower labour requirement and a shorter crop cycle. Chemical weed control with oxyfluorfen or oxadiazon was superior to hand weeding.
