Title : The agronomic performance of the newly released sugar cane variety M52/78
Year of publication : 1994
Keywords : SUGARCANE; VARIETIES; PLANT BREEDING; MSIRI STAFF; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Domaingue, R.; Bissessur, D.; Ramdoyal, K.; The agronomic performance of the newly released sugar cane variety M52/78; 1994
Abstract : The sugar cane variety M52/78 was recommended for commercial cultivation as from 1994. It is a semi-erect variety with average to tall canes of medium to fairly large diameter. It flowers profusely. It is a good yielding variety with high sucrose content, early in the season, adapted to the humid and superhumid environments. It outyields all commercial varieties during the first six to eight weeks of harvest in these tow environments. It is inferior to all the contro varieties when harvested late in the season owing to low cane yields then. It does not perform well in the drier environments. M52/78 is recommended for planting in B, F, H and L2 soils for harvesting at early and mid-season.

Citation : Rummun, K.; Govinden, N.; A formula for adjusting the grain yield of maize for missing hills in experimental plots; 1994
Abstract : For a fair comparison between treatments, maize grain yield data from experimental plots should be adjusted with respect to differential plant stands. Several methods based on the relationship between grain yield and plant stand were evaluated and a form

Title : Application of 15N-labelled urea to sugar cane through a drip-irrigation system in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1994
Keywords : SUGARCANE; NITROGEN FERTILIZERS; FERTILIZERS; PLANT NUTRITION; TRICKLE IRRIGATION; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Deville, J.; Application of 15N-labelled urea to sugar cane through a drip-irrigation system in Mauritius; 1994
Abstract : Nitrogen (N) fertilizer use efficiency by sugar cane in Mauritius rarely exceeds 40 per cent. Since drip-irrigation delivers water uniformly and directly to the root zone with little run-off, application of N via the drip-irrigation system could therefore provide a means of enhancing fertilizer N use by sugar cane. A study was initiated in Mauritius to determine what benefits would accrue from applying urea (120 kg N per ha) to sugar cane through the drip-irrigation network. The data obtained showed that the efficiency of fertilizer N when measured at harvest was nearly doubled by supplying the N daily over 10 to 20 weeks by fertigation. Increased yields of sugar or cane did not, however, accompany the improved N use efficiency. Furthermore, when N was applied through the drip-irrigation network, recovery of N at harvest did not accurately reflect N use efficiency.

Title : Influence of broadcast and split applications of potassium on sugarcane yields in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1994
Keywords : SUGARCANE; POTASSIUM; FERTILIZERS; PLANT NUTRITION; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Bholah, M. A.; Cavalot, P. C.; Gauthier, J.; Deville, J.; Influence of broadcast and split applications of potassium on sugarcane yields in Mauritius; 1994
Abstract : To improve potassium (K) fertilizer management of sugar cane in Mauritius, field experiments were initiated to study K nutrition and yield response of the sugar cane to split K application in soils were rainfall exceeds 3000 mm/year and to K broadcasted in soils where rainfall is lower than 2000 mm/year. The results obtained showed that a shift from the present practice of surface banding of K in ratoons to split or broadcast applications is not warranted. Splitting or broadcasting the K did not increase yield or K fertilizer efficiency use by sugar cane.
