Title : Gas-liquid chromatographic determination of fructose, glucose and sucrose in cane sugar products
Year of publication : 1980
Keywords : SUGARCANE; SUGAR; GAS LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY; SUCROSE; FRUCTOSE; GLUCOSE; ANALYTICAL METHODS; CHEMICAL ANALYSIS; MSIRI STAFF; ST; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Wong Sak Hoi, L.; Gas-liquid chromatographic determination of fructose, glucose and sucrose in cane sugar products; 1980
Abstract : A Gas-Liquid Chromatographic (GLC) method for the simultaneous determination of fructose, glucose and sucrose in cane juice and cane molasses is described. The sugars are converted to their oximes before being trimethylsilylated, with the result that glucose is presented as a single peak on the chromatogram; equilibrium attainment of the sample solution is therefore unnecessary. Comparison were made with the Lane and Eynon method for reducing sugars and the Jackson and Gillis No. IV double polarization method for sucrose determination. Accuracy and precision of the method were assessed and found to be good.

Title : Sugar cane by-products in animal feeding: their potential and limitations
Year of publication : 1979
Keywords : SUGARCANE; SUGARCANE BYPRODUCTS; ANIMAL NUTRITION; BAGASSE; MOLASSES; FILTER CAKE; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Deville, J.; Sugar cane by-products in animal feeding: their potential and limitations; 1979
Abstract : The potential offered by sugarcane by-products in animal feeding with regards to their availability and composition is discussed, attention being drawn to their limitations in the light of present knowledge. The main problems arising in the use of by-products are due to the low contents of protein and glucose precursors, and in the case of bagasse and cane tops to a high fibre content. The need for adequate supplementation has been shown and suggestions made for the local production of supplements.

Title : The production of silage from cane tops and its use as fodder for cattle
Year of publication : 1979
Keywords : SUGARCANE; SUGARCANE TOPS; ANIMAL NUTRITION; MOLASSES; SUGARCANE BYPRODUCTS; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Deville, J.; Wong You Cheong, Y.; Leclézio, P.; Duvivier, P.; The production of silage from cane tops and its use as fodder for cattle; 1979
Abstract : Silage from cane tops was prepared on a commercial scale using ammonium sulphate and molasses at 1 and 5 per cent respectively as additives. The silage was compared to fresh fodder in a feeding trial carried out at two sites. The rest of the ration consisted of molasses with 3 per cent urea at 3 per cent livewirght, together with copra cake 1 kg, fish meal 200 g and rice bran 500 g. At one site daily gain was 671 g and 751 g and at the other 566 g and 580 g for silage and fresh fodder, respectively, the differences not being significant. The results suggested that the production and use of cane tops silage should be seriously envisaged in Mauritius. The economics of ensiling is discussed.

Title : Energy in the sugar industry
Year of publication : 1979
Keywords : SUGAR INDUSTRY; ENERGY; ENERGY CONSUMPTION; MSIRI STAFF; ST; MAURITIUS;
Citation : d'Espaignet, J. T.; Energy in the sugar industry; 1979
Abstract : Energy requirements and availability in a modern raw sugar factory are outlined. Suggestions are made for increasing the surplus of electrical energy over the internal requirements of the sugar factory, mainly by the use of condensing turbines and dehydration of bagasse. The integration of facilities for alcohol production from molasses in a raw sugar factory is also considered.

Title : La déterioration des cannes tronconnées
Year of publication : 1979
Keywords : SUGARCANE; MECHANIZATION; MECHANICAL HARVESTING; HARVESTERS; EQUIPMENT; MSIRI STAFF; ST; MAURITIUS;
Citation : d'Espaignet, J. T.; Randabel, M.; La déterioration des cannes tronconnées ; 1979
Abstract : Following the introduction in Mauritius of chopper harvesters capable of working in burnt as well as in unburnt cane fields, a comparative study of deterioration rate of burnt and unburnt chopper harvested cane has been carried out. Burnt cane was found to deteriorate faster as evidenced by an increased of dextran, and glucose : sucrose ratio.
