Title : Effect of date of trashing on cane yield
Year of publication : 1999
Keywords : SUGARCANE; TRASHING; TRASHING DATE; YIELDS; MSIRI STAFF; COWA; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Seeruttun, S.; Mangar, M.; Barbe, C.; Gaungoo, A.; Effect of date of trashing on cane yield; 1999
Abstract : Cane trashing consists of the removal of dry leaves from the stem and lining all trash on alternate interrows to facilitaate harvest and reduce the amount of extraneous matter sent to the mill. In Mauritius, approximately 50 of cane are manually harvested as green cane. Two trashing are usually carried out, one as from end of March to Mid-May followed by a second one a few days prior to harvest. A significant reduction in cane yield was observed in plots trashed in April compared to those trashed only one week before harvest (1993). Trials between 1994 and 1998 have confirmed that early trashing may lead to a reduction in cane yield. Among possible causes identified were: mechanical injury, shock suffered by the stalk due to accidental removal of green leaves, emergence of more water-shoots and suckers canes brokend during trashing.

Title : Improving use of limited water by sugar cane
Year of publication : 1999

Citation : Ratna, D.; Teeluck, M.; Ah Koon, D.; Improving use of limited water by sugar cane; 1999
Abstract : A computer simulation approach was used to evaluate irrigation strategies that would improve the use of limited water supplies through optimum use of effective rainfall while meeting sugarcane water requirement. The results showed that for the site under

Title : Potassium leaching in soils under rainfed sugar cane in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1999
Keywords : SUGARCANE; SOILS; PLANT NUTRITION; POTASSIUM; LEACHING; CALCIUM; MAGNESIUM; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Paul, J. P.; Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Deville, J.; Potassium leaching in soils under rainfed sugar cane in Mauritius; 1999
Abstract : Leaching losses of potassium (K) in freely drained soils under sugarcane were followed in field lysimeters over a 3-year period at 2 sites receiving 3 700 and 1 550 mm rainfall per year, respectively. As little K (less than 5 kg K/ha/y) was lost by leaching, split application of K fertilizers would be superfluous even in the high rainfall regions of Mauritius. However, fertilizer K application even at 140 kg K2O /ha significantly enhanced leaching of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) from soils.

Title : Status of the sugar cane spotted borer, Chilo sacchariphagus Bojer, in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1999
Keywords : SUGARCANE; PESTS; BORING INSECTS; CHILO SACCHARIPHAGUS; INFESTATION; MSIRI STAFF; ENTO; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Soma, A.; Ganeshan, S.; Status of the sugar cane spotted borer, Chilo sacchariphagus Bojer, in Mauritius; 1999
Abstract : In 1996 and 1997, infestation by the spotted borer, Chilo sacchariphagus in the nost commonly cultivated sugar cane varieties in Mauritius was assessed in the different climatic regions. Compared to surveys conducted in 1964, 1965, 1984, and 1985 fields with higher levels of infestations were recorded. The highest infestations were in the subhumid non-irrigated zone in 1996 and in the humid non-irrigated zone in 1997. Data showed that a particular variety reacts differently to borers in different climatic regions and plant canes tend to be more susceptible than ratoons. The quadratic relationship between percent canes bored and percent internodes bored is given for both 1996 and 1997. A relation was found between percent canes bored and the number of internodes bored per bored cane.

Title : Quality of potato varieties during storage at three temperatures
Year of publication : 1999
Keywords : POTATOES; STORAGE; STORAGE LOSSES; QUALITY; STORAGE TEMPERATURE; MSIRI STAFF; FC; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Wong Yen Cheong, J. K. C.; Govinden, N.; Quality of potato varieties during storage at three temperatures; 1999
Abstract : The current practice of storing potato at 2-4 degrees C aims at preserving the physical appearance of the tubers by controlling sprouting, rotting and loss in weight. Low temperature storage is not only costly, it also causes tubers to develop reducing sugars and hence, to become unsuitable for processing into French fries and frisps. Triansl in 1990 and 1991 also showed that the quality of tubers can be maintained for up to 12 weeks by storing at 8-10 degree C, but beyond this period, it is necessary to control sprouting.
