Title : Shortening the selection process for sugarcane
Year of publication : 1999
Keywords : SUGARCANE; SELECTION; BREEDING; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Mamet, L. D.; Domaingue, R.; Shortening the selection process for sugarcane; 1999
Abstract : There is a need to shorten the selection process for sugarcane (Saccharum hybrids) in Mauritius in order to improve the efficiency of the varietal improvement programme. On average six to seven ratoon crops are grown in Mauritius and selection for ratooni

Year of publication : 1999
Keywords : SUGARCANE; CROP CYCLE; CULTIVATION PRACTICES; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Seeruttun, S.; Barbe, C.; McIntyre, G.; Crop cycle length and cane and sugar yields; 1999
Abstract : Two series of trials were initiated to compare different lengths of crop cycles for sugarcane harvested every 12 months under the local conditions over a six-year period. The first series involved harvesting cane every 24 months and in the second series c

Citation : Mamet, L.D.; The reliability of refractometric field Brix measurements; 1999
Abstract : The preliminary stages of many sugar cane selection programmes throughout the world are based on the premise that refractometric field brix is a reliable estimate of sucrose content. This relationship is questioned in this paper. Data from two trials in

Title : Optimizing steam utilization at a typical sugar factory
Year of publication : 1999
Keywords : SUGAR FACTORY; CANESUGAR; STEAM; STEAM UTILIZATION; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Kong Win Chang, K. T. K. F.; Lau Ah Wing, A. F.; Gunness, D.; Wong Sak Hoi, L.; Optimizing steam utilization at a typical sugar factory; 1999
Abstract : Flow rate of steam produced at a cane sugar factory from two low pressure boilers of 16 bar each, and steam consumed by steam turbines driving the mills and by a quadruple effect evaporator were measured. The results obtained were used to explore the possible steam economy in three different scenarios: the present set-up, the electrification of the factory prime-movers with low pressure steam of 16 bar and a quintuple effect evaporator, and in the third scenario, a high pressure boiler of 80 bar, a condensing-extraction turbo-generator set and a sextuple effect evaporator. The consumption of live steam per tonne of cane for the three scenarios were found to be respectively 440 kg/t cane, 336 kg/t cane and 122kg/t cane for providing the power house needs and those of the exhaust steam were respectively 441 kg/t cane, 368 kg/t cane and 295 kg/t cane for the processing needs of the factory.
