Title : Ratoon stunting disease
Year of publication : 1996
Keywords : SUGARCANE; RATOON STUNTING DISEASE; GERMPLASM; DISEASES; CLAVIBACTER XYLI; BACTERIAL DISEASES; MSIRI STAFF; PATH; BIOTECH; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Saumtally, S.; Dookun, A.; Autrey, L. J. C.; Ratoon stunting disease; 1996
Abstract : Ratoon stunting disease is one of the most important diseases of sugarcane. Owing to poor symptom expression and the fastidious nature of the bacterium, detection is a problem resulting in a high risk for dissemination through exchange of germplasm. Several serological techniques have been adopted for diagnosis and recently molecular methods have been investigated. The improved techniques should allow more efficient detection of latent infection and thereby ensure the movement of clean material.

Title : Geographical Information System and related information technology for the management of sugar cane lands
Year of publication : 1996
Keywords : INFORMATION SYSTEMS; GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS; INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY; SUGARCANE; LANDS; LAND USE; MSIRI STAFF; LRS; GIS; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Jhoty, I.; Geographical Information System and related information technology for the management of sugar cane lands; 1996
Abstract : Based on the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), an information system for the management of sugar cane lands called GISCANE is described. Results obtained have established the positive contribution of GIS, and allied techniques of information technology have been identified to provide input data as well as support to land planning exercises.

Title : GIS in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1995
Keywords : INFORMATION SYSTEMS; GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS; INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY; SPATIAL ANALYSIS; DIGITAL TERRAIN MODELLING; MSIRI STAFF; LRS; BIOM; GIS; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Chung Tze Cheong, M.; Jhoty, I.; Lim Shin Chong, J.; Fee Min Li Yim; Deville, J.; GIS in Mauritius; 1995
Abstract : A Geographical Information System for sugarcane lands, GISCANE, has been set up since 1992, following the donation of a copy of PC Arc/Info by ESRI to MSIRI. After surmounting the teething experience, some application developments are underway to promote this new technology in the sugar industry, as a decision-support tool. Variety appraisal, productivity assessment, and digital terrain modeling are examples of application that are being used presently. Development constraints encountered are mentioned and future strategies elaborated.

Title : Geographic Information Systems as decision support in the sugar cane industry
Year of publication : 1996
Keywords : GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS; INFORMATION SYSTEMS; SUGAR INDUSTRY; SUGARCANE; INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY; MAPS; MSIRI STAFF; LRS; BIOM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Jhoty, I.; Chung Tze Cheong, M.; Fee Min Li Yim; Lim Shin Chong, J.; Deville, J.; Ricaud, C.; Julien, R.; Wegener, M. K.; Keig, G.; Geographic Information Systems as decision support in the sugar cane industry; 1996
Abstract : Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology enables the analysis of data according to their spatial relationship. After a brief description of the computer hardware and software available, the procedures and basic requirements, the paper reviews the application of GIS in the sugarcane industry particularly in South Africa, Australia and Mauritius. Specific examples to illustrate its potential as a decision-support tool are given for Mauritius and Australia. Prospects for future development are examined in the light of advances made in the field of information technology. These include improved techniques of photogrammetry, remote sensing, digital terrain modelling and crop growth modelling, for improving management practices so as to ensure better productivity and environmental protection.

Citation : Jacquin, E.; Research in mechanization to sustain agriculture; 1996
Abstract : Labour intensive operations for sugar cane and food crop cultivation have been identified by the Mechanization Division of the MSIRI in view to carry out research aimed at minimizing the impact of labour shortage and cost. Ways and means of reducing production costs and sustaining productivity are suggested and problems arising from increased mechanization are considered. The strategy adopted to carry out the research programme is developed.
