Title : Loss of acrolein from water by volatilization and degradation
Year of publication : 1974
Keywords : HERBICIDES; ACROLEIN; MSIRI STAFF; FC; AUSTRALIA;
Citation : Bowmer, K. H.; Lang, A. R. G.; Higgins, M. L.; Pillay, A. R.; Tchan, Y. T.; Loss of acrolein from water by volatilization and degradation; 1974
Abstract : The loss of acrolein by volatilization and degradation from a large tank of water is described. The standard analytical method for carbonyl compounds, a colorimetric reaction with dinitrophenylhydrazine, did not distinguish acrolein from a relatively non-volatile and non-toxic reaction product. In a modification of the method to correct the error, acrolein was separated from reaction products by scrubbing with air. Although acrolein is sufficiently volatile to use air-scrubbing to separate it from reaction products, its loss by evaporation from an open tank was much less than its loss by reaction in the local irrigation water. In other waters differences in chemical properties could affect the loss of acrolein by reaction, and greater turbulence is expected to increase loss by volatilization.

Title : Composition and yield of sugar cane at different ages in relation to its utilization as an energy source for livestock
Year of publication : 1974
Keywords : SUGARCANE; SUGARCANE TOPS; ANIMAL NUTRITION; LIVESTOCK; PROTEIN; CARBOHYDRATES; FIBRE; SUGARCANE BYPRODUCTS; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Deville, J.; Wong You Cheong, Y.; Composition and yield of sugar cane at different ages in relation to its utilization as an energy source for livestock; 1974
Abstract : The object of feeding sugar cane to cattle is to provide the bulk of the energy requirements in the form of carbohydrates. The yield and composition of sugar cane stalks, derinded stalks and tops at ages of 5,7 and 10 months were studied for varieties S17 and M93/48 at Henrietta and varieties S17 and M377/56 at St. André. Better yields of carbohydrates were obtained from 7 months old cane at St. André than from 10 months old cane at Henrietta. The yields from the latter were comparable with those from 12-18 months old cane in Barbnados.

Title : Operation of a Saturne diffuser in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1974
Keywords : SUGARCANE; DIFFUSERS; DIFFUSION; EQUIPMENT; PROCESSING; MSIRI STAFF; ST; MAURITIUS;
Citation : d'Espaignet, J. T.; Rivalland, J. F. R.; Operation of a Saturne diffuser in Mauritius; 1974
Abstract : The difficulties encountered with the operation of the Saturne diffuser installation are reviewed. The measures taken to overcome these difficulties as well as others aiming at improving the extraction performance of the installation are described. Results of experimental work undertaken in order to assess the general performance of the milling-diffusion plant are given.
