Citation : Ricaud, C.; An overview of new technologies to promote efficiency of sugar cane production; 1991
Abstract : In order to be more competitive, the cane sugar industry will have to improve productivity per unit manpower, area and cost. To meet these objectives, it will have to be technology-intensive. The paper deals with some aspects of biotechnology, irrigation, fertilizer management, GIS and remote sensing for land resources management, integrated pest management, and minimum tillage, with due regard to environmental protection.

Abstract : Phyllophaga smithi, Heteronychus licas and Alissonotum piceum are the main sugar cane white grubs in Mauritius. After having been a serious threat to the local sugar industry for over thirty years, P. smithi has declined considerably in importance. The

Abstract : Chilo spp. are among the most important stem borers of sugar cane in the Old World. Chemical control is not very effective mainly because of the concealed habit of the borer larvae. Efforts have therefore mostly been directed to alternative methods of c

Abstract : Compaction is a major problem in agriculture and is mainly caused by field traffic. With the expected acceleration in mechanization in Mauritius, fears exist that soils will be rapidly compacted as traffic load increases. A rapid and sensitive method is

Abstract : This paper presents the results of a study of light interception and evaporation from a sugar cane/maize intercrop in Mauritius. Data are presented for trials carried out after the 1987 first ratoon and these are compared with published data from the previous 1986 plant cane season. In both years soil evaporation was substantial, ranging from 15 to 70 per cent of total evaporation depending on canopy cover. Marked differences were found in the ability of the sugar cane to compete with the maize between the two years. This led us to conclude that maize is an unsuitable intercrop for use in plant cane. The total water requirement of the mixed crop estimated using potential evaporation and crop factors was frequently very different from the measured crop water use. Throughout both seasons the water use of the maize was consistently underestimated and that of the cane overestimated.
