Title : Gumming disease
Year of publication : 1996
Keywords : SUGARCANE; GERMPLASM; DISEASES; XANTHOMONAS CAMPESTRIS; GUMMING DISEASE; PATHOGENS; MSIRI STAFF; PATH; BIOTECH; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Saumtally, S.; Dookun, A.; Autrey, L. J. C.; Gumming disease; 1996
Abstract : The latent phase of gumming disease contributes to its spread through infected setts, and therapy is unknown. Variation among isolates of the bacterium has been observed, indicating a heterogeneous population. Thus ther is a danger of introducing new strains when germplasm is exchanged. Detection can be carried out by isolation, immunofluorescent microscopy using monoclonal antibodies as well as DNA probes.

Title : Preliminary investigations of host selection mechanisms by leafminer Liriomyza trifolii
Year of publication : 1983
Keywords : LIRIOMYZA TRIFOLII; BEANS (PHASEOLUS); POTATOES; INSECT PESTS; PESTS; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Fagoonee, I.; Toory, V.; Preliminary investigations of host selection mechanisms by leafminer Liriomyza trifolii; 1983
Abstract : The leafminer, Liriomyza trifolii Burgess, apolyphagous agricultural pest, can attack crops at different stages of development. Experiments in Mauritius on the differential susceptibility of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and potato provided information on factors that influence food-plant selection by th eleafminer. The distribution and density of leaf trichomes, as well as the nutritional status of the food-plants, were found to be important in section. High trichome density acted as a physical deterrent to Lirmyza flies, just as senescing primary bean leaves induced non-acceptability. When given a choice, flies prefer bean to potato leaf discs, though the latter possessed less trichomes. Other factors (chemical attractants and some nutrient components) might therefore also be involved in the complex selection behavious of L. trifolii.

Title : Irrigation of interline and rotational crops on sugarcane lands in Mauritius: present status and prospects
Year of publication : 1986
Keywords : IRRIGATION; FOOD CROPS; MAIZE; GROUNDNUTS; POTATOES; BEANS (PHASEOLUS); INTERCROPPING; ROTATIONAL CROPPING; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Nicolin, M. G.; Irrigation of interline and rotational crops on sugarcane lands in Mauritius: present status and prospects; 1986
Abstract : No new land is available in Mauritius for the intensification of agriculture. Production of food crops for self sufficiency is being achieved by making use of rotational land and sugarcane interrows. The different irrigation methods in use and their compatibility with current systems of food crop (maize, groundnuts, potatoes and beans [unspecified]) production are examined. The adoption of different cane row spacings and different cropping systems as a means of increasing output and irrigation efficiency is considered, and the importance of irrigation on the yield and quality of interline and rotational crops is discussed.
