Title : Environment, flowering, rainfall and dosage rate as factors affecting response to ripener Polaris
Year of publication : 1980

Citation : Julien, M. H. R.; Soopramanien, G. C.; d'Espagnac, M. A. L.; Environment, flowering, rainfall and dosage rate as factors affecting response to ripener Polaris; 1980
Abstract : Increase of sucrose content following Polaris application were similar when determined by polarimetric and gas liquid chromatography analytical methods. The results showed that increases of pol per cent cane represented true increases of sucrose. Treatment with the ripener also lowered the levels of both glucose and fructose. Increases in sucrose content were however, influenced to a greater extent by the geographical sector of the island than by soil type. Flowered and vegetative stalks responded equally well when Polaris was applied during the flag stage of the high flowering variety S17. Rain up to 5 mm during or just after spraying reduced response. The parameters which must be used to determine the optimum dosage for Polaris treatment are cost of Polaris and its application; its effect on sucrose content; yield after application and yield for regrowth crop.

Citation : Julien, M. H. R.; Soopramanien, G. C.; Martiné, J. F.; Medan, H.; The role of side shoots in flowered stalks of sugar cane; 1980
Abstract : Sucrose yield and its components are compared from 6 to 27 weeks after anthesis in vegetative canes induced to flower artificially, and in flowered canes on which the side shoots were continually defoliated. The results confirm earlier reports that flower

Citation : Maudarbocus, S. M. R.; The orifice viscometer: A new technique for measuring rheological properties of massecuites and molasses; 1980
Abstract : A simple, cheap and reliable method of measuring rheological properties of massecuites and molasses is described. This involves measuring the head loss across an orifice for a given flow rate. Comparisons between results obtained with the orifice viscometer and a pipeline viscometer are presented.

Title : The control of Cyperus rotundus in sugar cane fields and in fallow land

Abstract : Cyperus rotundus is one of the most troublesome weeds growing in agricultural lands of Mauritius. Efforts are constantly being made to eradicate it by testing a number of herbicidal treatments in ratoon canes and in fallow land. In ratoon canes, the best results have been obtained with post-emergence spraying of Velpar K4( hexazinone + diuron) used either alone or in mixtures with Actril-DS (ioxynil-2,4-D) or 2,4-D amine salt. On C. rotundus subsp. tuberosus, only one application was needed to g et very satisfactory control whereas on rutundus, two applications were necessary. In fallow land excewptional control was obtained with glyphosate. Very satisfactory result was also obtained from the application of hexazinone.

Title : The effect of various herbicidal treatments on Digitaria horizontalis growing in plant cane

Abstract : One of the problem weeds of Mauritius is D. horizontalis which occurs in all climatic regions of the country. Many chemical treatments have been tested in pre and post-emergence of this grass weed growting in fields of cane plant. In pre-emergence, very good control has been achieved by spraying Metribuzin (Sencor) or a mixture of Diuron and Metribuzin. In post-emergence, good control was obtained with mixtures of Metribuzin or Diuron with Ioxynin + 2, 4-D when the g rass was young. However when the weed was at an advanced stage of growth, the only chemical which gave very satisfactory control was Asulam. MSMA did not give adequate weed control whereas mixtures of Metribuzin and Diuron with the non-phytotoxic soil Seppic IIE were completely ineffective.

Abstract : The female sex pheromone of the sugar cane borer, Chilo sacchariphagus, has been shown to contain the two structurally related compounds, (Z)-130octadecenyl acetate (I) and (Z)-13-octadecen-1-o1 (II). These components were detected in female abdominal tip extracts by gas liquid chromatography (GLC) combined with electroantennography (EAG) and were identified by their GLC behaviour, micro0ozonolysis and interconversion, and by comparison of natural and synthetic material. Field tests in Mauritius showed that traps baited with componentsI and II combined in ratios from 1:1 to 9:1 caught male C. sacchariphagus moths, and that the 7:1 ratio was comparable in performance with a virgin female moth. Neither component presented separately in traps caught significant numbers of moths.

Abstract : The variation of soil exchangeable Ca and Al with pH has been studied and used to explain the yield response of sugarcane to liming acid soils of Mauritius. Liming did not improve the yield of sugarcane. This may be attributed to absences of Mn and Al t
