Title : La récolte mécanique de la canne à sucre à Maurice
Year of publication : 1999

Abstract : After a first attempt in the mid 1970's, mechanical harvesting of sugar cane was introduced once more at the end of the 1980's after agricultural labour shortage. Several types of machines have been tested but chopper harvesters have been found to be better suited for local conditions. This new mode of harvesting has so far not revealed any deliterious effect on cane yield. However, harvesters operating in the rocky soils of Mauritius are subject to damage resulting in cane losses during harvesting. The amount of cane harvested mechanically reached 610 000 tonnes, i.e., 10 per cent of total cane produced in 1998. Of this, 84 per cent were chopped cane.

Title : Determining the most appropriate medium for the dissemination of information to sugar cane growers in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1998
Keywords : SUGAR INDUSTRY; EXTENSION; DIFFUSION OF INFORMATION; AUDIOVISUAL AIDS; MASS MEDIA; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Pillay Samoo, K.D.; Determining the most appropriate medium for the dissemination of information to sugar cane growers in Mauritius; 1998
Abstract : The phenomenal growth of communication technology in recent years has given an increasingly prominent place to the use of mass media in development strategies. Sugar cane growers of the eastern sector of Mauritius were categorised according to size of holdings and interviewed about their perception of the different media used for conveying information on sugar cane cultivation and the perspectives of exploring new means of communication. Access to information was found to be related to scale operation. A series of improvements to existing extension delivery systems were suggested. Overall, television was rated as the most appropriate medium for disseminating information to growers and should be considered.
