Title : Pollen fertility and its importance in the efficiency of seed setting in sugar cane breeding
Year of publication : 1994

Citation : Mangar, M.; Pollen fertility and its importance in the efficiency of seed setting in sugar cane breeding; 1994
Abstract : In sugarcane breeding programs conducted at the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute, a high percentage failure in seed setting is usually observed. For the period 1990-1993, this failure ranged from 23-35 per cent. The success or failure of seed

Citation : Mungur, H.; Effect of two harvest techniques, selective harvesting and stubble shaving on second ratoon yield and tillering and regrowth of sugar cane in a third ratoon crop; 1994
Abstract : Selective harvesting of sugar cane is a common feature in the humid and superhumid regions of Mauritius, representing about 31 per cent of the sugar cane lands. With the enormous growth in the manufacturing and tourism sectors, there has been a decline i

Title : Is supplementary Nitrogen fertilization useful to sugarcane in Mauritius?
Year of publication : 1994
Keywords : SUGARCANE; NITROGEN; FERTILIZERS; PLANT NUTRITION; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Paul, J. P.; Is supplementary Nitrogen fertilization useful to sugarcane in Mauritius?; 1994
Abstract : The merit of providing sugar cane during its elongation phase a supplementary N rate of 120 Kg N/ha over and above the current 120 Kg N/ha recommended was investigated in first ratoon cane at two sites (Mon Rocher and Union Park) differing in climatic conditions. The results showed that the response to N was dependent on the availability of soil mineral N. Supplementary N enhanced N uptake but did not further improve tiller density, leaf area index nor their longevity as already found with the current single dose of 120 kg N/ha 1-2 month after harvest of preceding crop. An increase in green cane yield and dry matter was observed at Union Park as a result of applying an additional single dressing of 120 kg N/ha at elongation phase of growth.

Title : Family evaluation at the single stool stage of the sugar cane selection programme at the MSIRI (1987-1992)
Year of publication : 1994
Keywords : SUGARCANE; SELECTION; BREEDING; MSIRI STAFF; BIOM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Travailleur, A.; Family evaluation at the single stool stage of the sugar cane selection programme at the MSIRI (1987-1992); 1994
Abstract : In the sugarcane breeding programme at MSIRI, varieties are evaluated through selection and those which have proved to be the best ones are released for commercial cultivation after 12-14 years. The preliminary stages of selection programme are very important since the selected population will serve as a basis for further selection stages. Therefore an efficient selection strategy need to be used at the preliminary stages. This study aims at reviewing the selection method and criteria presently used at the MSIRI at the single stool stage (stage 2) by evaluating the progenies at this stage using data for the years 1987 to 1992. The evaluation of crosses using selection rates are also reviewed.

Citation : Gopee, M. D.; Evaluation of different methods for the elimination of bacterial contaminants in in vitro bud culture of sugar cane; 1994
Abstract : Different hot water treatments and sterilizing agents were evaluated with the aim of reducing latent bacterial infection in sugar cane buds used in tissue culture work. The Australian cold soak hot water treatment (cold soak in running water for 48 hr fol
