Title : Limitations of aerial sprays on fungicides for the control of yellow spot disease of sugarcane
Year of publication : 1986
Keywords : SUGARCANE; FUNGICIDES; CONTROL; MYCOVELLOSIELLA; DISEASES; FUNGAL DISEASES; YELLOW SPOT; MSIRI STAFF; PATH; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Autrey, L. J. C.; Dhayan, S.; Sullivan, S.; Limitations of aerial sprays on fungicides for the control of yellow spot disease of sugarcane; 1986
Abstract : Yellow spot disease in variety S17 was controlled profitably with aerial sprays of fungicides Thiophanate-methyl and Benomyl when infection was between 7 per cent and 22 per cent in early April. Under such levels of infection one, two or three sprays, applied between April and mid-May reduced the incidence of disease in flowered stalks of S17 resulting in significant increases in sucrose content. Three different patterns of disease evolution with low, medium and high foliar infection in early April have been identified and are important in deciding the number and timing of sprayings at any particular location. One or two sprays are recommended when infection lies between 5 per cent and 22 per cent in early April while three applications are probably effective for infection levels between 22 per cent and 30 per cent but the feasibility requires further evaluation.

Title : Adoption of drip irrigation technology by small holders : Prospects and problems
Year of publication : 1986
Keywords : TRICKLE IRRIGATION; SUGARCANE; FARMING SYSTEMS; IRRIGATION SYSTEMS; IRRIGATION; MSIRI STAFF; ECON; MSIRI COLLABORATORS; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Berthelot, P. B.; Batchelor, C. H.; Adoption of drip irrigation technology by small holders : Prospects and problems; 1986
Abstract : Major technical and financial features of drip irrigation are reviewed. Prospect of adoption of such systems by small holders are then assessed in the light of findings of a research station experiment in Mauritius. Possible problems that may hinder successful adoption are discussed. A set of conditions for successful transfer of drip technology is then proposed as well as policy measures for ensuring the financial viability of small drip irrigated farming systems.

Citation : Berthelot, P. B.; Payandi Pillay, K.; Structure of agricultural research and linkage with extension: Mauritius at the crossroads; 1986
Abstract : The structure of agricultural research within the island is described. Linkage with extension is assessed. Proposed means of strengthening the linkage are discussed and the potential contribution of on-farm research in that respect is looked into.

Title : Residual value of rock phosphate applied at planting and effect of supplementary annual additions of triple superphosphate on cane and sugar yields in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1986
Keywords : SUGARCANE; PHOSPHATES; ROCK PHOSPHATE; FERTILIZERS; PLANT NUTRITION; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Cavalot, P. C.; Deville, J.; Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Residual value of rock phosphate applied at planting and effect of supplementary annual additions of triple superphosphate on cane and sugar yields in Mauritius; 1986
Abstract : A study was undertaken to determine the residual effect of rock phosphate applied at planting and the effectiveness of annual supplementation of soluble P on cane and sugar yields. Rock phosphate applied in one single dressing in the furrows at planting was found to be adequate for a crop cycle of seven years. This was true even in very deficient soils. Further additions of triple superphosphate in plant cane and ratoons did not extend the beneficial effect of rock phosphate. A reliable soil test which will give a measure of residual P was found necessary for future P fertilizer recommendations.

Title : La variété de canne à sucre M 1557/70 libérée en 1986
Year of publication : 1986

Citation : Domaingue, R.; Ramdoyal, K.; Bissessur, D.; La variété de canne à sucre M 1557/70 libérée en 1986; 1986
Abstract : The sugarcane variety M 1557/70 was released in January 1986. This variety has very high cane and sugar yields but average sucrose content. It is better adapted to lower rainfall areas. M 1557/70 is resistant to gumming and smut diseases. It is susceptible to yellow spot and should not be planted at high altitude and in high rainfall areas in B, F and H soils. It is recommended for middle to late harvest in all soil types, and for earlier harvest in B, H, L and P soils.

Year of publication : 1986

Citation : Domaingue, R.; Ramdoyal, K.; Julien, M. H. R.; R 570, variété de canne à sucre libérée en 1985; 1986
Abstract : The variety R 570 was released in 1985. It has very high cane and sugar yields. Its sucrose content is low early in the season, but improves at middle and late harvests. It is adapted to F, H, L and P soils for middle and late harvests. However, it could be harvested earlier in P soils, whereas it is adapted to B soils for late harvests only. R 570 is slightly susceptible to gumming and smut but susceptible to yellow spot. It should not be planted at high altitude, and in high rainfall areas because of its susceptibility to yellow spot.

Abstract : Unsuccessful attempts have been made in the past to increase maize production in Mauritius and diversify the agricultural economy, which is dominated by cane sugar production. Such efforts are now being renewed and the intention is to attain self-suffici
