Title : Preliminary studies on the biology, status and control of Thrips palmi (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1988
Keywords : POTATOES; THRIPS PALMI; INSECT PESTS; PESTS; PEST CONTROL; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Rajabalee, A.; Ganeshan, S.; Preliminary studies on the biology, status and control of Thrips palmi (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in Mauritius; 1988
Abstract : In September 1985, a new insect, identified as Thrips palmi, was observed on egg plant in Mauritius. This insect rapidly spread all over the island attaining pest proportions on egg plant, potato and some other crops. Severe losses were caused to the potato production in 1986. The biology, nature of damage and recommended methods of control are described in this paper.

Title : Estimation of sugar loss due to infestation by the stem borer, Chilo sacchariphagus, in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1990
Keywords : SUGARCANE; CHILO SACCHARIPHAGUS; PESTS; INSECT PESTS; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Rajabalee, A.; Lim Shin Chong, L. C. Y.; Ganeshan, S.; Estimation of sugar loss due to infestation by the stem borer, Chilo sacchariphagus, in Mauritius; 1990
Abstract : To justify the cost effectiveness of sex pheromones for the control of the stem borer Chilo sacchariphagus Bojer in sugarcane, the relationship between the per cent internodes bored and the various yield parameters, i.e. pol per cent cane, purity, fibre per cent cane, industrial recoverable sugar per cent cane (IRSC) and weight had to be determined. Analyses were made on cane samples, with varying degrees of infestation, in each of the four climatic regions of Mauritius. Simple regression analyses were carried out between each of the yield components and the per cent internodes bored. Multiple regressions for loss in relation to degree of stem borer infestation and climatic regions were obtained for the per cent mass, IRSC and sugar loss. The multiple correlation coefficients were 0,95, 0,94 and 0,96 respectively.

Citation : Ramdoyal, K.; Domaingue, R.; Potassium metabisulphite as a substitute for sulphur dioxide in preservative solution used during crossing of sugar cane; 1990
Abstract : Investigations were carried out on the possibility of using potassium pyrosulphite (KMS) as a substitute for gaseous sulphur dioxide in preservative solutions used during sugar cane breeding. At a working concentration of 100 ppm Sulphur dioxide, no diff

Abstract : DNA restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) were evaluated as a tool for distinguishing among three races of Xanthomonas campestris pv vasculorum (Xcv), causal agent of gumming disease of sugar cane. Two probes, pUFT-1 and pUFT-11, derived from X.c. pv citri, and six restriction enzymes, EcoR I, Hind III, Bgl II, Xho I, Bam H I and Ava I, were used. RFLPs were detected among the three races with bands specific to race 2, after digestion with enzyme Ava I and hybridization with probe pUFT-1. RFLPs were not found with the other enzyme-probe combinations. Races 1 and 3 could not be distinguished. The results indicated that the three races were genetically closely related and that, to detect small variations in their chromosomal DNA, probes derived from a genomic DNA library of Xcv will have probably to be used.
