Title : Potato germplasm acquisition and utilization : the case of Mauritius
Year of publication : 1987
Keywords : POTATOES; GERMPLASM; VARIETIES; MSIRI STAFF; FC; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Govinden, N.; Potato germplasm acquisition and utilization : the case of Mauritius; 1987
Abstract : This case study focuses on the objectives of the germplasm screening programme and on the sources and type of germplasm required. The procedure followed in the screening programme is described. Commercial varieties are imported mainly from Australia, France and the Netherlands, and clones from the International Potato Center. They are tested at 2 sites and in 2 seasons for 4 years. Selection is based on yield, adaptation to climate and planting season and reaction to major diseases and pests. Varieties released by the programme and their important attributes are also given.

Title : The status of potato germplasm utilization in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1987
Keywords : POTATOES; GERMPLASM; VARIETIES; SEEDS; DISEASES; MSIRI STAFF; FC; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Govinden, N.; The status of potato germplasm utilization in Mauritius; 1987
Abstract : In this country report, mention is made of the major problems in relation to varietal requirements. They include the high cost of imported seeds, the poor physiological condition of local seeds when planted int he second season, the lack of varieties for early planting and the susceptibility to bacterial wilt disease of commercial va rieties. These commercial varieties are all of foreign origin. Clones from the International Potato Centre have been tested, but to date, none has been found suitable. In spite of their resistance to bacterial wilt the clones have not been superior in yield to the commercial varieties.

Title : Advances in computer identification of nematodes
Year of publication : 1987
Keywords : COMPUTER SOFTWARE; NEMATODA; SUGARCANE; PESTS; MSIRI STAFF; BIOM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Boag, B.; Topham, P. B.; Smith, P.; Fong San Pin, F. H. F. G.; Advances in computer identification of nematodes; 1987
Abstract : The use of computers to assist in the identification of plant-parasitic nematodes is a relatively recent innovation in nematode taxonomy and their further development requires different programs to be adequately assessed. Three procedures, matching, modified Gower's coefficient and a statistical technique, were compared using a small desk top micro-computer. The results from all three procedures were statistically highly correlated in their ranking of species. The time taken by the matching procedure was less than a third of that using the statistical procedure. Where a large mainframe computer is available the statistical procedure may be the best technique but for a small micro-computer it is suggested that either the matching or the modified Gower's coefficient would suffice.
