Abstract : Preliminary observations have shown that substantial losses occur through the extractor fans of chopper harvesters during the cleaning process. These losses are higher in green cane harvesting than under burnt conditions. Choper harvesters equipped with variable-speed extractor fans have provided opportunities to reduce such cane loss. The influence of three extractor fan speeds (1,000 rpm, 1,200 rpm, and 1,400 rpm) on the amount of cane lost during green cane harvesting of the predominant varieties harvested mechanically was inestigated in Mauritius. The amount of cane lost through the extractors indicated that irrespective of cane variety, the optimum extractor fan speed is around 1,200 rpm, which is the currently recommended speedin green cane harvesting. This recommendation may change if the effect of the associated level of extraneous matter on sugar recovery is quantified.

Title : Trends in cane quality and its effects on some aspects of sugar processing in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1997
Keywords : SUGARCANE; QUALITY; MSIRI STAFF; ST; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Wong Sak Hoi, L.; Autrey, L. J. C.; Trends in cane quality and its effects on some aspects of sugar processing in Mauritius; 1997
Abstract : The trends in thequality of cane sent to sugar factories in Mauritius are examined in terms of fibre percent cane, sucrose percent cane, sucrose fibre ration in cane and mixed juice purity, using the data from the last 35 years. An attempt is made to highlight some of the detrimental effects of poor cane quality on factory performance, in particular, mill extraction, weight of bagasse per cent cane, sucrose lost percent cane in bagasse, filter cake and molasses. Changes made to factory equipment to accommodate the gradual decline in cane quality are also discussed.
