Title : The use of crystallizers for the cooling of high grade strikes in raw sugar manufacture
Year of publication : 1963
Keywords : SUGAR; CRYSTALLIZATION; COOLING SYSTEMS; PROCESSING; MSIRI STAFF; ST; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Lamusse, J. P.; Wiehe, H. F.; Randabel, M.; The use of crystallizers for the cooling of high grade strikes in raw sugar manufacture; 1963
Abstract : Experiments carried out in 5 raw-sugar factories have shown that the purity drop between massecuite and molasses is higher by an average of 6.7 points for A-massecuites and 4.7 points for B-massecuites when these massecuites are cooled in crystallizers.

Title : Practical methods of finding optimum settings for automatic controllers
Year of publication : 1963
Keywords : SUGAR; PROCESSING; AUTOMATIC CONTROL; ENGINEERING; MSIRI STAFF; ST; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Le Guen, F.; Practical methods of finding optimum settings for automatic controllers; 1963
Abstract : This paper considers the three control effects known as 'proportional', 'integral', and 'derivative responses' which are usually found in automatic controllers. For each of these control effects there are optimum settings which depend upon the plant that is being controlled. To find these optimum settings, it is necessary to understand the units in which the setting dials are calibrated and these are discussed in the second part of the paper. Finally the three most commonly used methods for finding the optimum settings are described.

Title : Mathematical treatment of data upon root systems of sugar cane
Year of publication : 1963
Keywords : SUGARCANE; ROOT SYSTEMS; PLANT WATER RELATIONS; PHYSIOLOGY; MSIRI STAFF; BOT; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Mongelard, C.; Mathematical treatment of data upon root systems of sugar cane; 1963
Abstract : A study of the root systems of two sugar cane varieties, M 147/44 and Ebčne 1/37, growing in different localities is described. The dry weight of total roots was adopted as the criterion of root development. By taking the log percentage mean root dry weight below each soil layer, significant differences not apparent before were found to exist. All pairs of regression lines except that obtained for the variety M 147/44 grown at Pamplemousses and Magenta and that for Ebčne 1/37 grown at Belle Rive and Union Park were significantly different.

Title : Fertilizers and the sugar industry of Mauritius
Year of publication : 1963
Keywords : SUGARCANE; FERTILIZERS; PLANT NUTRITION; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Parish, D. H.; Fertilizers and the sugar industry of Mauritius; 1963
Abstract : The picture of fertilizer imports into Mauritius for the years 1900 to 1960 has been examined and it is concluded that the principal factor governing the level of these imports was the tonnage of sugar product. The shortcomings of fertilizer practices during this period were principally a wasteful use of potash and neglect of phosphate. The basic philosophies behind rational fertilization have been examined and the current fertilizer practice in Mauritius is discussed on this basis.
