Title : Pest status, biology and control measures for soil pests of sugar cane (including nematodes) in Africa and close islands
Year of publication : 1995
Keywords : SUGARCANE; PESTS; PEST CONTROL; NEMATODA; SCARABAEIDAE; ISOPTERA; MARGARODES; CICADA; SOIL PESTS; MSIRI STAFF; ENTO; WHITE GRUBS; AFRICA;
Citation : Rajabalee, A.; Pest status, biology and control measures for soil pests of sugar cane (including nematodes) in Africa and close islands; 1995
Abstract : More than 70 species of soil pests, including nematodes, have been associated with sugar cane in Africa and neighbouring islands. White grubs (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) appear to be the dominant species both in damage levels and distribution. Termites and nematodes are relatively less important, and the cicada Yanga guttulata is restricted to Madagascar. Margarodids are not important, although large populations may lead to an over-estimation of their economic importance. The bioecology, economic importance and existing control methods are reviewed. Soil pest biology is discussed in relation to status and efficacy of control measures. The importance of laboratory rearing of various pests and problems encountered, especially with white grubs, are also exposed. Future prospects and spheres of research are suggested.

Title : Armyworm damage to mechanically harvested sugar cane in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1995

Citation : Rajabalee, A.; Ganeshan, S.; Armyworm damage to mechanically harvested sugar cane in Mauritius; 1995
Abstract : Three species of armyworm, Mythimna curvula, Simplicia pannalis and Aethis ignava, have been collected from young sugar cane ratoons following a heavy attack in many fields after mechanical harvesting. Severe damage results in complete defoliation. M. curvula feeds on cane foliage and S. pannalis and A. ignava feed on cane trash. Preliminary observations indicate that there is no appreciable effect of armyworm damage on yield, but these need confirmation. Thiodicarb, which at 1.5 g a.i./l gave better control than azinphos methyl at 0.4 g a.i./l, has a stomach action with limited contact action. It is therefore better adapted within an integrated pest management strategy. The tachinid fly, 'Alsomyia' anomala (generic name uncertain) represented 95 per cent of the number of parasites. Average parasitism was 20 per cent.

Title : Guidelines for the mechanization of cultural operations for sugar cane cultivated on tea lands
Year of publication : 1995
Keywords : SUGARCANE; MECHANIZATION; CULTIVATION METHODS; MSIRI STAFF; MECHAN; COWA; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Jacquin, E.; Rivière, V.; Mc Intyre, G.; Guidelines for the mechanization of cultural operations for sugar cane cultivated on tea lands; 1995
Abstract : Many measures have been identified to meet the additional sugar quota of 85 000 tonnes, among which, the conversion of some 2000 hectares of tea lands to sugar cane cultivation. All operations on tea lands, except soil tillage and furrowing, are performed manually. High soil moisture content resulting in poor in-field trafficability is the main limitation to mechanization. With increasing labour shortage and costs, ways and means of utilizing agricultural equipment have to be found. As little experience has been qcquired in the field of mechanization under such conditions, preliminary recommendations are given for operations ranging from uprooting of tea busches up to cane planting. As regards the mechanization of some cultural operations up to loading, only suggestions are made.
