Title : La variété de canne à sucre M 126/63 homologuée en 1983
Year of publication : 1983
Keywords : SUGARCANE; VARIETIES; BREEDING; MSIRI STAFF; PB; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Julien, M. H. R.; Domaingue, R.; Moutia, J. R.; Bissessur, D.; La variété de canne à sucre M 126/63 homologuée en 1983; 1983
Abstract : The sugarcane variety M 126/63 was released for commercial cultivation in 1983. It has high cane yields and generally low sucrose content which improves late in the season. Thus it has good sugar yields when harvested late in most soil types and is therefore recommedded for this harvest date in B, H, L and P soils. However, due to its susceptibility to yellow spot the cultivation of M 126/63 in B and H soils should be limited to low altitude zones only.

Title : The effects of environment and time of harvest at early stages of selection in sugar cane. 1. Selection in plant cane crop
Year of publication : 1983

Citation : Julien, M. H. R.; Peerun, Z.; Domaingue, R.; The effects of environment and time of harvest at early stages of selection in sugar cane. 1. Selection in plant cane crop; 1983
Abstract : The effects of three dates of harvest at an early stage of selection in a plant crop of sugar cane were studied in three contrasting environments. Brix, weight and cane number were measured in three families each represented by 72 genotypes. Selection p

Title : Analysis of the factors responsible for low sucrose content recorded in recent years
Year of publication : 1983
Keywords : SUGARCANE; YIELDS; SUCROSE; CLIMATIC FACTORS; MSIRI STAFF; BOT; FED; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Julien, M. H. R.; Soopramanien, G. C.; Ng Ying Sheung, R.; Fanchette, C.; Analysis of the factors responsible for low sucrose content recorded in recent years; 1983
Abstract : Evolution of sucrose per cent cane was compared for the two periods 1955-1959 and 1976-1982 respectively. Sucrose per cent cane was lower for the later period as well as its rate of increase from early to mid-harvest. The dominant factors responsible for these differences are climatic conditions and presence in maturity behaviour and intrinsic sucrose content are not responsible for the observed differences.

Title : Cooling policies for batch crystallizers
Year of publication : 1983
Keywords : CRYSTALLIZATION; COOLING; COOLING SYSTEMS; SUGAR; PROCESSING; MSIRI STAFF; ST; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Maudarbocus, S. M. R.; White, E. T.; Cooling policies for batch crystallizers; 1983
Abstract : This paper develops an optimum cooling concept for pure sucrose solutions and extend it to impure sucrose solutions. The applicability of such a concept to individual crystallization is discussed. Results of an optimum cooling programme using a crystallization model are presented for a range of pan drop conditions, and are compared with typical industrial cooling practices. Limitations on implementation of the optimum cooling policy are also discussed.

Title : Use of Roundup (Glyphosate) for the control of problem weeds in sugar cane fields
Year of publication : 1983
Keywords : SUGARCANE; WEEDS; WEED CONTROL; GLYPHOSATE; HERBICIDES; MSIRI STAFF; COWA; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Mc Intyre, G.; Pitchen, J.; Barbe, C.; Yerriah, M.; Use of Roundup (Glyphosate) for the control of problem weeds in sugar cane fields; 1983
Abstract : A number of annual and perennial weeds are effectively controlled by post-emergence sprays of Roundup at appropriate dosages. Because the chemical is also strongly phytotoxic to sugar cane, its application has been recommended in the absence or in pre-emergence of the crop. However, this is not effective. In short season plant cane which is planted too soon after ploughing out the previous crop for weeds to have emerged. Experimentation has shown that when sugar cane has reached an average height of at least 120 cm, Roundup can safely be applied to provide satisfactory weed control without causing any reduction in cane and sugar yield.
