Abstract : The major research thrusts at the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute (MSIRI) are aimed at improving sugar cane planters' productivity through more efficient production systems. Emphasis is placed on exchange of information with the planting community for technology transfer. The different planter categories involved in sugar cane cultivation are encouraged to improve their cropping systems through new production techniques and labour-saving strategies. The results of a survey conducted among a sample of the planters to assess the adoption of new technologies, such as better performing sugar cane varieties, innovative cultural practices and cost-reducing techniques, disseminated by the extension staff of the MSIRI are presented.

Abstract : Irrigation is vital in subhumid areas to sustain economic production of sugar cane. It is also important input data for a GIS database for sugar cane land management. A survey was conducted in Mauritius in 1999 to collect data on irrigation practices and irrigation systems in use. The objectives were, inter alia, to provide up to date information on irrigation status in the sugar industry and allow studies on yield relationship to land characteristics for re-assessment of land suitability. Valuable statistics on the distribution and practices of irrigation were derived and a map was also prepared. Twenty two per cent of the total cane area in Mauritius was irrigated, the three main irrigation systems being overhead, drip (trickle) and surface. Low-pressure overhead irrigation systems, such as the centre pivot and dragline, were gradually replacing high-pressure overhead systems.

Abstract : A re-assessment of land suitability classes for sugar cane was carried out to determine the impact of changes over the years in inputs mainly of cultivars, irrigation systems and mechanized operations, which constitute some of the criteria used for the land suitability classification. An analysis of cane yield for three years was undertaken and results show that the yield capacity of fields in different suitability classes differs and that the changes (improvements) in inputs are responsible for a shift in obtainable yields, i.e. from 90.0 to 101.9 t ha-1 for the highly suitable class, from 70.0 to 82.7 t ha-1 for the moderately suitable class and from 55.0 to 67.6 t ha-1 for the marginally suitable class.

Abstract : The Global Positioning System (GPS) is an information technology tool that has been successfully used for cane field mapping, providing data in the geographical information system (GIS) and assisting in the management of transport. In the Mauritian sugar industry, the GPS is helping in the production of large-scale contour maps, the positioning of centre pivot irrigation systems, and in establishing ground reference points to enable further controlled field surveys with the Total Station. The use of Differential GPS (DGPS) and the integration of other technologies towards a total system for precision agriculture for sugar cane are discussed.

Abstract : Operating data obtained from two factories were used to test the validity of the Hugot formula which quantifies mill extraction at various imbibitions per cent fibre for a constant cane crushing rate. Simulations were carried out through an energy balance to determine electricity production at different imbibition per cent fibre. The net and combined revenues obtained from sugar extraction and electricity production were determined and plotted against imbibition per cent fibre. Results show that for each factory there is an optimum imbibition per cent fibre that yields maximum revenue.
