Abstract : A study was undertaken to investigate the possibility of intercropping ratoon sugarcane with rice. When intercropped as upland rice in inter-rows of sugarcane planted at the conventional row spacing of 1.50 m, rice varieties used in flooded paddies of Mauritius showed very low yields. Intercropped rice had no significant adverse effects on the sugar yields. Yields up to 1.6 tons/ha were obtained with short-cycle rice varieties planted in every second inter-row (227cm) of 1st ratoon sugarcane in 'pineapple' planting arrangement (227 cm and 97 cm) under irrigated conditions. Up to 0.9 tons of rice per ha were obtained under rainfed conditions.

Abstract : Surveys were conducted in fields of variety S17 at 63 sites in 1977 and 1978 to determine the intensity of infection in different areas of the island. Losses due to the disease in different environments were assessed by comparing diseased plots kept disease-free by weekly sprays of the fungicide Benomyl. It was estimated that about 3100 hectares were affected on miller-planters' land in 1977, with a loss of 2500 to 5000 tonnes of sugar. Estimates for 1978 were 4200 hectares affected and 5200 to 8700 tonnes of sugar lost.

Abstract : The liquid excrement of many Homoptera, which often accumulates as honeydew, can be harmful to the insects that produce it. Disposal of excrement to avoid or reduce its harmful effect is therefore important. The methods of disposing of excrement in Coccidae are described. These iinsects have an anal apparatus for propulsion of excrement away from the body. The musculature of the rectum is not involved in this act. Attendance by ants modifies excretory behaviour in Coccidae, much as it does in Aphididae.

Abstract : Five species of Ricaniidae from Mauritius are described or redescribed. They are Trysanor cicatricosus spec. nov., gen. nov., Tarundia servillei (Spinola), T. cintipennis Stal, T. marginata Melichar and Privesa laevifrons (Stal). T. clara Synave is synonymised with T. servillei, T. mameti Synave with T. cinctipennis, and P. vinsoni Synave with P. laevifrons. The characters of the three Mauritian Tarundia species that appear to be of generic value are indicated. It is considered that the type locality of T. cinctipennnis - Sierra Leone - was given in error and that the species is probably confined to the Mascarenes. The considerable variation in some of the species is described. All are confined in Mauritius to indigenous vegetation.

Abstract : The salient features of the biology of Pulvinaria iceryi (Sign) are described and 25 known host plants are listed. The insect can drastically affect sugarcane by withdrawing phloem sap and possibly by a toxic action that follows feeding. It is considered a dangerous insect wherever it coexists with sugarcane.
