Title : Experimentation with DPX 3674 (Velpar) alone and in mixtures with Diuron in plant and ratoon canes
Year of publication : 1978
Keywords : SUGARCANE; WEED CONTROL; DIURON; HERBICIDES; CYPERUS ROTUNDUS; CYNODON DACTYLON; MSIRI STAFF; COWA; VELPAR; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Mc Intyre, G.; Experimentation with DPX 3674 (Velpar) alone and in mixtures with Diuron in plant and ratoon canes; 1978
Abstract : Velpar is a new herbicide which gives good pre- and post-emergence control of both graminaceous and broad-leaf weeds. In plant canes, Velpar was found to be highly phytotoxic, particularly under dry conditions, but when the amount of water received through rainfall and/or irrigation was adequate, the level of phytotoxicity was quite low. Ratoon canes proved to be tolerant as in only one occasion was cane yield reduced by the 2 kg a.i./ha rate of Velpar. Compared with Velpar used alone, a broader spectrum of weeds was controlled by mixtures of Velpar and diuron. The efficacy of Velpar was not enhanced by the addition of a non-ionic surfactant at 0.2 per cent. The mixture that has given optimum weed control whilst being safe to sugar cane is 0.5 kg a.i. of Velpar + 2 kg a.i. of diuron per hectare.

Title : Sorption of phosphate by hydrolytic reaction products of aluminium
Year of publication : 1978
Keywords : ALUMINIUM; HYDROLYSIS; PHOSPHATES; CHEMISTRY; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; ;
Citation : Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Huang, P. M.; Sorption of phosphate by hydrolytic reaction products of aluminium; 1978
Abstract : Direct evidence is provided showing that the retention of anions, e.g. phosphate, by hydrolytic reaction products of Al is enhanced and not re duced when those products are precipitated in the presence of low molecular weight biochemicals of common occurrence in nature. This is of fundamental importance to understanding the transport and fate of nutrients and pollutant anions in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

Title : A method for degluming sugar cane caryopses
Year of publication : 1978
Keywords : SUGARCANE; SEEDS; GLUMES; METHODOLOGY; BREEDING; MSIRI STAFF; PB; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Peerun, Z.; Hermelin, P. R.; Lalouette, J. A.; A method for degluming sugar cane caryopses; 1978
Abstract : A thresher designed to deglume the caryopses of sugarcane is described. Its use enables the sowing of seeds from viable crosses, rather than the sowing of fuzz, and with pre-sowing germination tests the required number of seedlings may be obtained by sowing a given quantity of seeds. The technique results in a saving of about 75 per cent in labour, time and space during greenhouse sowings. Its other advantages, including greater ease of storing seeds, are enumerated.

Title : Intercropping sugar cane with maize
Year of publication : 1978
Keywords : SUGARCANE; MAIZE; INTERCROPPING; DIVERSIFICATION; MSIRI STAFF; FC; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Pillay, A. R.; Mamet, J. R.; Intercropping sugar cane with maize; 1978
Abstract : The production of maize in every second inter-row of first and second ratoon sugar cane was studied in four locations in Mauritius in 1974, in trials based on combinations of three maize densities and three fertilizer levels. Analysis of the data showed that intercropping sugarcane with maize had no adverse effects on cane and sugar yields, and suggested that planting an early-maturing maize amongst the cane at a density of 19,000 plants, with 76 kg N, 38 Kg P2O5, 62 kg K2O, was the most profitable method under Mauritian conditions.

Title : Problems, progress and prospects in sugar cane disease control
Year of publication : 1978
Keywords : DISEASE CONTROL; SUGARCANE; DISEASES; MSIRI STAFF; PATH; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Ricaud, C.; Problems, progress and prospects in sugar cane disease control; 1978
Abstract : Disease problems in sugar cane during the past fifteen years are reviewed. Several important diseases have been spreading around the world with movement of cane varieties and new outbreaks of disease which had been under control have been reported. A cause for concern has been the development of new virulent strains of pathogens. New methods of disease diagnosis have been developed. There is need for more precise assessment of losses by various diseases.

Year of publication : 1978

Citation : Ricaud, C.; Autrey, L. J. C.; Branched forms of the organisms associated with ratoon stunting disease; 1978
Abstract : Light microscope examinations of extracts from internode tissues of RSD infected canes revealed the presence of branched forms of the RSD-associated organism. They were not observed in extracts from nodal tissues. The organism was more common and branching more pronounced in a variety imported from USA undergoing quarantine that in a variety infected locally.
