Title : Deterioration of chopper-harvested cane
Year of publication : 1977
Keywords : SUGARCANE; MECHANIZATION; HARVESTERS; MECHANICAL HARVESTING; MSIRI STAFF; ST; MAURITIUS;
Citation : d'Espaignet, J. T.; Randabel, M.; Deterioration of chopper-harvested cane; 1977
Abstract : Cane chopper harvesters have been used for the first time in Mauritius in 1976. The post-harvest deterioration of chopped and whole stalk burnt cane has been measured in 5 factory areas over the 1976 season. Deterioration in quality of chopped cane as indicated by purity, glucose ratio and pH of juice was noticeable after a storage period of 13 hours. Dextran levels in chopped cane was found to be 2500 ppm on Brix after 13 hours, rising to 5000 ppm on Brix after 18 hours and to 20 000 ppm on Brix at the end of 55 hours. In whole stalk cane, dextran level was only 2000 ppm on Brix after 55 hours. In order to avoid loss in recoverable sugar and to reduce risks of a lowering of factory performance, it would be advisable to process chopped cane within 13 hours after harvest.

Title : Occurrence and fungicidal control of groundnut rust in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1977

Abstract : An epidemic of rust (Puccinia arachidis) developed on groundnut in Mauritius, after the reintroduction of the fungus in the island in 1975. All varieties cultivated, Virginian and Spanish types were highly susceptible and the disease appears to be a potential threat to groundnut production if uncontrolled. Losses from groundnut rust, which have been found to be of the order of 70 per cent in some trials, were considerably reduced through weekly applications of Dithane M-45 (zinc and manganese ethylemebisdithiocarbamate, 80 per cent) or Daconil 2787 (chlorothalonil - tetrachloroisophthalonitrile, 75 per cent).

Abstract : A list of the main indigenous plants of Rodrigues island is given and comprises some morphological features useful for identification, their present localities and frequency. It appears that some of the endemic species are on the verge of extinction whilst others are probably already extinct.

Title : Use of unshelled groundnuts seeds for planting
Year of publication : 1977
Keywords : GROUNDNUTS; SEEDS; VARIETIES; PLANTING MATERIAL; PLANTING METHODS; CROPPING SYSTEMS; MSIRI STAFF; FC; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Pillay, A. R.; Wong Yen Cheong, K.; Use of unshelled groundnuts seeds for planting ; 1977
Abstract : The performance of unsoaked and soaked in-shell groundnut seeds of Cabri and Shulamit was compared to than of shelled seeds, under irrigated conditions in two sites. Marked differences were noted in the rate of emergence amongst treatments. There was no significant differences in yield between treatments, but the costs of an additional amount of in-shell seeds at planting and an appreciable increase of labour at harvest would be superior to the cost of hand-shelling seeds before planting.
