Title : Plant characters and maturity rating in maize
Year of publication : 1976
Keywords : MAIZE; MATURATION; PHYSIOLOGY; PLANT DEVELOPMENT; MSIRI STAFF; FC; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Pillay, A. R.; Mamet, J. R.; Plant characters and maturity rating in maize; 1976
Abstract : In field experiments in two locations and two seasons, highly significant correlations were obtained between leaf number, days to midsilk, plant height and maturity of maize hybrids from France and Holland. In the environments used, hybrids of different maturities differed markedly in leaf number, days to mid-silk and plant height. Days to silking and plant height varied with location and s eason, and it was concluded that t hey were inconsistent indicators of maturity. Leaf number appeared to be a stable character. It was affected only to a slight extent by environmental conditions. It was suggested that it could be used to ra te maturity of newly introduced hybrids.

Title : Field preparation for mechanical harvesting
Year of publication : 1976
Keywords : SUGARCANE; HARVESTING; MECHANIZATION; MECHANICAL HARVESTING; MSIRI STAFF; AGRIC ENG; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Pilot, L.; Li Pi Shan, L.; Field preparation for mechanical harvesting; 1976
Abstract : On account of the continuing shortage of labour for cane harvesting, it is quite obvious that for the survival of the Mauritian sugar industry, the introduction of m echanical harvesting on an experimental basis has become a necessity. Adequate field conditions are essential for the efficient operation of harvesters. As it takes a long time to get fields suitably prepared, it is considered that a start on field modification for harvesting be made forthwith. Guidelines for field preparation are presented.

Title : Performance of two breeds of cattle fed high levels of molasses/urea, restricted forage, starch and protein supplements
Year of publication : 1976
Keywords : MOLASSES; UREA; ANIMAL NUTRITION; STARCH; PROTEINS; SUGARCANE BYPRODUCTS; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Poillot, G.; Leclézio, P.; Wong You Cheong, Y.; Performance of two breeds of cattle fed high levels of molasses/urea, restricted forage, starch and protein supplements; 1976
Abstract : Rice bran and coconut cake gave as good results as maize grain in a trial with local breeds of cattle fattened on high levels of molasses/urea. The average daily gains in live weight were of the order of 570g. Acacia (Leucaena leucocephala) gave better results as a forage source than elephan grass. Local creole cattle (Bos taurus) grew 20 per cent faster than the Zebu. It is suggested that the moderate growth rates obtained reflected limiting genetic potential in the local breeds.

Abstract : A coryneform bacterium has regularly been observed in centrifuged diffusates from tissues of canes showing typical mature node symptoms of ratoon stunting disease in Mauritius. It was not present in healthy symptomless canes originating from cuttings tre

Title : Borer (Chilo sacchariphagus Boj.) injuries to sugar cane in relation to wind breakage
Year of publication : 1976
Keywords : SUGARCANE; CHILO SACCHARIPHAGUS; CLIMATIC FACTORS; PESTS; INSECT PESTS; MSIRI STAFF; ENTO; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Williams, J. R.; Borer (Chilo sacchariphagus Boj.) injuries to sugar cane in relation to wind breakage; 1976
Abstract : Data obtained in sugarcane fields after cyclone "Gervaise" on February 6-7, 1975, showed that borer (Chilo sacchariphagus) injuries had not augmented wind breakage of canes. The nature of borer injury in relation to crop growth is discussed and it is concluded that borer injury does not materially influence breakage of canes in Mauritius during cyclonic winds.
