Abstract : Sulfentrazone at rates varying between 0.6 and 1.8 kg a.i./ha alone and at 0.75 and 1.125 kg/ha tank-mixed with atrazine or diuron at 2.0 kg a.i./ha were compared to a standard treatment of oxyfluorfen + diuron at 0.5 + 2.0 kg a.i./ha for the pre-emergence control of weeds in plant cane. Sulfentrazone at 1.5 and 1.8 kg/ha continued to control both broadleaf and grass weeds 12 to 16 weeks after application, with control being comparable to the standard oxyfluorfen + diuron treatment. However, some crop injury was observed at the 1.8 kg/ha rate. Tank-mixing lower rates of sulfentrazone with atrazine or diuron did not improve the level of control. Control of Cyperus rotundus and Kyllinga bulbosa, observed in field trials, was confirmed in the greenhouse. Sulfentrazone at 1.5 kg/ha appears to be promising for broad-spectrum pre-emergence weed control in sugar cane.

Abstract : With the coming into operation of two continuous A-centrifugals at Union St Aubin sugar factory, raw sugar quality often did not conform to specifications. The situation was improved after corrective measures were taken to: regulate and increase massecuite throughput, optimize wash water used and ensure evaporative cooling of the cured sugar in the dryer. The centrifugals successfully produce raw sugar meeting specifications without having to resort to modifyin the centrifugals or to automate the dryer.

Abstract : The sugarcane yellow leaf virus (SCYLV) that is associated with one form of sugarcane yellow leaf syndrome can be detected by both serological and molecular methods. However, many of these tests are tedious when carried out on a large scale, especially with regard to sampling and sample preparation. Most of the available methods use the leaf as the starting material, for which grinding is necessary. An alternative starting material, sugarcane juice, is proposed for stalks having internodes. A simple punching tool is used to collect samples of juice from the stalk internodes and these samples are ready for use in ELISA after a short centrifugation. It was found that there was generally a higher virus titre at the top of stalks compared to the base. SCYLV was present in all the stalks of infected stools. Attempts to cure infected seedcane of the virus by thermotherapy were unsuccessful.

Abstract : For the assessment of sugar factory performance, the mass of the main products namely, cane, imbibition water, mixed juice, bagasse, molasses and sugar must be measured and the constituents such as Brix, pol, sucrose, reducing sugars and moisture determined. Errors in the mass measurement of the products and in the analysis of the constituents can lead to recorded fictitious physical loss or gain. This paper deals with the measures to be taken to minimize errors in massing and analysis of the products for constituents mentioned above. Under the most unfavourable circumstances, a + 0.1 per cent error both in massing and analysis can lead to a fictitious undetermined sucrose gain or loss of about 0.05 per cent cane.
