Citation : Govinden, N.; Intercropping of sugar-cane with potato in Mauritius: A successful cropping system; 1990
Abstract : The bulk of the potato in Mauritius is produced on sugar cane lands. Of the three potato-cropping systems practised in the country, this is by far the most important, accounting for about 77 per cent of potato production. The rest is produced in rotatio

Keywords : SUGARCANE; NITROGEN; PLANT NUTRITION; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Figon, C.; Deville, J.; Nitrogen fertilization of sugar cane in Mauritius - The ecologists' way; 1990
Abstract : The effect of omitting or halving the recommended N rate (120 kgN/ha) in alternate years on sugar yields were studied in field trials laid down during 1979 and 1982 in the different agro-climatic regions of Mauritius. The results showed that due to the p

Citation : Rajabalee, A.; Banymadhub, N.; Notes préliminaires sur la cochenille Pseudaspidoproctus fulleri Cockerell (Homoptera: Margarodidae), une nouvelle introduction à l'Ile Maurice; 1990
Abstract : The mealybug, Pseudaspidoproctus fulleri Cockerell (Homoptera: Margarodidae) was found for the first time in Mauritius in January 1990. Preliminary observations are made on the distribution and host plants of the insect. 'Chiendent', Cynodon dactylon appears to be the preferred host plant. Methods of control of P. fulleri are suggested.

Title : Potassium fertilization of sugar cane in relation to its availability in soils of Mauritius
Year of publication : 1990
Keywords : SUGARCANE; POTASSIUM; FERTILIZERS; PLANT NUTRITION; SOILS; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Cavalot, P. C.; Deville, J.; Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Potassium fertilization of sugar cane in relation to its availability in soils of Mauritius; 1990
Abstract : Analysis of sugar cane yield responses to potassium (K) fertilization showed that in soils with more than 0.50me*K/100g, the yield benefit was negligible. In those soils high in available K, more than 300 kg K2O/ha was recovered by sugar cane even when no K was added. The efficiency of K fertilizer utilization by sugar cane rarely exceeded 50 per cent and was as low as 20 per cent in soils where available K exceeded 0.50 me/100g. Interpretation of soil trest K value through the maintenance philosophy is no longer justified in the face of evidence which dispels the fear that the sufficiency approach would mine the soils of available nutrients. Accordingly, in formulating K fertilizer recommendations to sugar cane, due consideration should be given to the inherent capacity of the soils to satisfy a substantial portion of the K needs of sugar cane

Title : The influence of increasing the magnesium/calcium ratio of liming materials on sugar cane growth in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1989
Keywords : SUGARCANE; SOIL AMENDMENTS; MAGNESIUM; CALCIUM; LIMING; LIMING MATERIALS; PLANT NUTRITION; GROWTH; SOIL MANAGEMENT; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Cavalot, P. C.; Deville, J.; The influence of increasing the magnesium/calcium ratio of liming materials on sugar cane growth in Mauritius; 1989
Abstract : Field studies were performed to determine whether magnesium (Mg) containing liming agents should be used in sugarcane cultivation to offset the known depressive effect of liming on soil exchangeable Mg. The data obtained showed that liming with dolomite or with dolomite-coral sand mixtures did not have any beneficial effect on sugarcane yields. This lack of yield response upon liming is attributed to the occurrence of an already satisfactory Mg status in the soils. No evidence emerged to show that the Mg nutrition of sugarcane was hampered by application of coral sand. The improvement in the soil Mg/Ca ratio observed upon dolomite application support the view that a wide range of Mg/Ca ratio may persist in soils without any effect on sugarcane growth. The present study confirms that in sugarcane cultivation liming should be aimed at raising soil pH to 5.0 or thereabouts.

Abstract : The white grub, Hoplochelus marginalis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) was first discovered in Réunion island in 1981 and is an important sugarcane pest. This insect represents a threat to the sugar industry and agriculture in Mauritius in general. Precautionary measures aimed at minimizing the risk of entry of this pest into Mauritius are described. These include rescheduling of air flights from Réunion Island, to avoid the grand flight period of the insect, control of movement of ships, detection surveys in Mauritius and other strict quarantine measures.

Title : Screening of herbicides for use in tobacco plantations
Year of publication : 1989
Keywords : HERBICIDES; TOBACCO; WEED CONTROL; WEEDS; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Mc Intyre, G.; Barbe, C.; Screening of herbicides for use in tobacco plantations; 1989
Abstract : A brief description of the method of establishing a tobacco plantation is given. Formerly, growers had to essentially resort to hand-weeding to clean their fields, whereas according to the results obtained in the trials described in this paper, at least two chemicals, oxadiazon and diphenamid, can be safely used as a pre-transplanting treatment. Other chemicals, namely, oryzalin, dinitramine and metobromuron have proved phytotoxic to the crop. Oryzalin and diphenamid, applied as post-transplanting treatments have also shown an unacceptable level of phytotoxicity. Oxadiazon at 1 kg a.i./ha has been the best treatment, combining crop safety and efficacy on weeds.
