Citation : Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Paul, J. P.; Mooniaruck, A.; Chong Shin Sen, P.; Use of chlorophyll meters to monitor the nitrogen status of sugar cane; 2001
Abstract : As leaf greenness can now be measured instantaneously by the chlorophyll meter, the latter technology, if applicable to sugar cane, would not only enable a sugar cane field to be sampled quickly and easily but would also provide the opportunity to fine-tu

Title : Sustainability of sugar cane production in Mauritius as indicated by soil erosion and agrochemical movement
Year of publication : 2001
Keywords : sugarcane; soil erosion; runoff; cultural practices; agrochemicals movement; Mauritius;
Citation : Ng Cheong, L. R.; Ah-Koon, P. D.; Umrit, G.; Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Sustainability of sugar cane production in Mauritius as indicated by soil erosion and agrochemical movement; 2001
Abstract : The impacts of minimum tillage planting of sugar cane and mulching on surface/subsurface runoff, soil loss and agrochemical movement were studied in Mauritius from 1998 to 2000, in a silty clay loam having a 5 per cent slope and receiving an annual rainfall exceeding 3000 mm. Less than 7 per cent of annual rainfall was dissipated as surface and shallow subsurface (90 cm) runoffs. With the current practice of lining trash in alternate interrows, maximum soil loss was 1.8 tonnes/ha/year. Due to the rapid dissipation of the agrochemicals, their offsite movement was low, being less that 0.25 per cent of the herbicides applied, 3 kg N/ha/year, and 1 kg P/ha/year. This insignificant movement of soil and agrochemicals was influenced more by rainfall intensity than bmulching or tillage. The present study showed that current cultural practices are adequate for sustainable cane production in Mauritius.

Title : Molasses loss in the Mauritian sugar industry
Year of publication : 2001
Keywords : Sugarcane byproducts; canesugar; Molasses; Sugar loss; Mauritius;
Citation : Wong Sak Hoi, L.; Molasses loss in the Mauritian sugar industry; 2001
Abstract : Data from thirty-five years crushing seasons have been used to highlight the relationship between cane quality and impurities from mixed juice and sucrose loss in Mauritian molasses. Characteristics of Mauritian molasses are examined, notably the magnitude of sucrose loss, molasses exhaustion in terms of the target purity difference, and the effect of the boiling process on the removal of non-sucrose present in the raw material.

Title : Precision agriculture for sugar cane in Mauritius
Year of publication : 2001
Keywords : Sugarcane; Precision agriculture; information technologies; mechanization; spatial variability; yield monitoring; Global positioning system; GPS; precision agriculture; Contour mapping; irrigation; ground control points; geographic information systems; Mauritius;
Citation : Jhoty, I.; Autrey, L. J. C.; Precision agriculture for sugar cane in Mauritius; 2001
Abstract : Precision agriculture, embracing new information and communication technologies, offers the possibility for improving crop production through management of spatial variability leading to profitability and protection of the environment. While studies on precision agriculture for sugar cane were initiated elsewhere, a program was implemented in Mauritius to investigate its applicability and effectiveness in the sugar cane industry. Yield monitoring is a first approach to be followed by soil variability mapping. Preliminary results of spatial yield analyses have demonstrated that there is important within-block and temporal yield variation. Related information technology tools are already in use to promote precision agriculture within a total system.

Title : Contribution of microsatellites to sugar cane breeding program in Mauritius
Year of publication : 2001
Keywords : Sugarcane; legitimacy test; Biotechnology; diversity studies; alkaline treatment; Mauritius;
Citation : Jannoo, N.; Forget, L.; Dookun, A.; Contribution of microsatellites to sugar cane breeding program in Mauritius; 2001
Abstract : Sugarcane microsatellite libraries have recently been developed. Here, we report the efficiency of some microsatellite primers to generate polymorphic and easily scorable markers in sugar cane. Primers selected proved to be very efficient when applied to test for legitimacy of clones, to identify contaminants in nurseries and for diversity studies. We also investigated the amplification of microsatellite primers on DNA extracted using an alkaline treatment method, and this technique looks promising.

Title : Nitrogen requirements of sugar cane as influenced by ratoon age
Year of publication : 2000
Keywords : Sugarcane; Fertilizers; Nitrogen; Ratoon age; Plant nutrition; Mauritius;
Citation : Bholah, A.; Ng Kee Kwong, K. F.; Nitrogen requirements of sugar cane as influenced by ratoon age; 2000
Abstract : Fertilizer N requirements of sugar cane as a function of ratoon age were studied in nine field trials in Mauritius. The data showed that although cane and sugar yields of varieties R570 and M3035/66 decreased with increasing age of ratoon, the responses to 50 Kg N / ha increments in the late ratoons were comparable or even larger than those observed in young ratoons. Since net revenues accruing from N fertilization and economic optimum N requirements were the same for both varieties irrespective of ratoon age, there was no justification for increasing N rates in old ratoon cane.

Title : Control of Cyperus rotundus by halosulfuron in sugar cane intercropped with potato or groundnut
Year of publication : 2000
Keywords : Sugarcane; herbicides; weed control; Cyperus rotundus; halosulfuron; tolerance; Potatoes; groundnuts; intercropping; Mauritius;
Citation : Barbe, C.; Seeruttun, S.; Gaungoo, A.; Control of Cyperus rotundus by halosulfuron in sugar cane intercropped with potato or groundnut; 2000
Abstract : The tolerance of potato and groundnut established in cane interrows to post-emergence application of halosulfuron has been evaluated in 4 field trials. Rates were applied following two scenarios namely an overall spray on both crops and a directed spray to the cane rows only. Results have shown that an overall spray reduced yield of potato and groundnut whereas directed spray treatments were safe to both crops. When the two crops are established in cane interrows it is now possible to control Cyperus rotundus with halosulfuron by directing the spray to the cane rows.

Title : Evaluation of sequential samplers for the determination of insoluble solids in mixed juice
Year of publication : 2000
Keywords : canesugar; juices; sequential samplers; boiling house recovery; Mauritius;
Citation : Wong Sak Hoi, L.; Tse Chi Shum, S.; Evaluation of sequential samplers for the determination of insoluble solids in mixed juice; 2000
Abstract : Insoluble solids in mixed juice inflate its mass, lead to over-estimation of undetermined loss in sucrose recovery and under-estimation of the boiling house recovery. If insoluble solids content in mixed juice is accurately estimated, the true masses of Brix, pol and sucrose can be calculated by using a multiplication factor of (100 percent insoluble solids)/100. A viable, automatic and continuous sampling device is therefdore essential to ensure representative samples of mixed juice for analysis of insoluble solids. Laboratory tests have shown that sequential samplers give reproducible and reliable results. Subsequent factory trials have proved that they are robust enough to withstand industrial conditions. The light, portable model of the sequential sampler is recommended for the sampling of mixed juice for insoluble solids analysis.
