Title : Needs of sugar cane for silicon when growing in highly weathered latosols
Year of publication : 1970
Keywords : SOILS; LATOSOLS; SUGARCANE; SOIL AMENDMENTS; SOILS; PLANT NUTRITION; SOIL MANAGEMENT; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Wong You Cheong, Y.; Halais, P.; Needs of sugar cane for silicon when growing in highly weathered latosols; 1970
Abstract : Yields of sugarcane in low-silicon soils were significantly increased by the application of both calcium silicate and coral sand. Over and above the significant response to Ca and increase in soil pH, there was a highly significant response to Si. The overall response to the higher level of calcium silicate application (14.2 tons/ha) over the control was 28.3 tons of cane per hectare. Neither calcium silicate nor coral sand influenced the sucrose content of the juice.

Title : The two gumming diseases of sugar cane
Year of publication : 1969
Keywords : SUGARCANE; GUMMOSIS; XANTHOMONAS VASCULORUM; DISEASES; BACTERIAL DISEASES; MSIRI STAFF; PATH; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Antoine, R.; The two gumming diseases of sugar cane; 1969
Abstract : A historical review of the discovery of gummosis in various c ane sugar producing countries is given. It would appear that, although the first definite record of the disease dates back to 1869 in Brazil, gummosis was a major limiting factor to sugarcane

Title : Silicon, calcium and manganese contents of cane leaf sheaths on the great soil groups of Mauritius
Year of publication : 1969
Keywords : SUGARCANE; SOIL AMENDMENTS; NUTRIENT CONTENTS OF PLANTS; PLANT ANALYSIS; SOILS; PLANT NUTRITION; TRACE ELEMENTS; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Halais, P.; Silicon, calcium and manganese contents of cane leaf sheaths on the great soil groups of Mauritius; 1969
Abstract : The silicon content of cane leaf sheaths is a sensitive reflexion of soil reserves in combined silicon, hence of the degree of laterisation of tropical soils through leaching of this element and accumulation of aluminium and ferric hydroxides. The manganese content of this tissue faithfully reflects the degree of base desaturation conducive to soil acidity. On the other hand, the calcium content of cane sheaths is a poor indicator of the degree of base desaturation of soils. Consequently, organized leaf sheaths surveys for Si, Ca and Mn contents in cane growing countries may lead to useful contributions concerning soil science in addition to their already established value in connection with mineral soil amendment recommendations for cane production improvement.

Title : The role of leaves in the perception and inhibition of the flowering stimulus in sugar cane
Year of publication : 1969
Keywords : SUGARCANE; FLOWERING; INFLORESCENCES; DEVELOPMENT; PHYSIOLOGY; MSIRI STAFF; PB; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Julien, M. H. R.; The role of leaves in the perception and inhibition of the flowering stimulus in sugar cane; 1969
Abstract : Studies were conducted to determine the effects on flowering response of the removal of selected leaves from sugarcane plants during the induction period. It has been shown that the removal of mature leaves 3 and 4 from plants of the variety US 48-34 resulted in earlier flowering compared to undefoliated controls. Furthermore, the removal of the spindle or leaf 1 or leaf 2 resulted in delay and reduced intensity of emergence of the inflorescences. The inhibitory effect of lower leaves on flowering can best be interpreted by assuming that the lower leaves produce a transmissible inhibitor which prevents growth of the inflorescence primordium.
