Title : Rock and stone removal for efficient mechanization at Médine sugar estate
Year of publication : 1998
Keywords : SUGARCANE; MECHANIZATION; ROCK; STONES; MSIRI STAFF; MECHAN; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Jacquin, E.; d'Arifat, B.; Rock and stone removal for efficient mechanization at Médine sugar estate; 1998
Abstract : Shortage and high cost of labour have led to the mechanization of cultural operations involved in sugar cane production in Mauritius. The presence of rocks in the soil profile and the hummocky nature of the topography are obstacles to efficient mechanization. A long term plan of rock and stone removal has been initiated at Médine Sugar Estate, where 83 per cent of arable land is described as being very rocky and stony. This plan comprises three levels of rock and stone removal, accompanied by a complete uprading of rrigation systems and field layout. Its aim is to allow the mechanization of fertilizer spreading, mechanical harvest with a chopper harvester and mechanical planting with a whole-stalk planter in view of reducing production costs. The techniques adopted and the equipment utilized are described.

Abstract : Poor dry bean yields have been frequently observed in variety trials on research stations in Mauritius. Since there was no obvious cause, trials were conducted in 1990 and 1991 to assess the effects on yields of nematodes; the macronutrients, N, P, and K;

Abstract : The trends in the quality of cane sent to sugar factories in Mauritius are examined in terms of fibre per cent cane, sucrose per cent cane, sucrose/fibre ration in cane and mixed juice purity, using the data from the last 35 years. An attempt is made to highlight some of the detrimental effects of poor cane quality on factory performance, in particular, mill extraction, weight of bagasse percent cane, sucrose lost percent cane in bagasse, filter cake and molasses. Changes made to factory equipment to accommodate the gradual decline in cane quality are also discussed.

Title : Halosulfuron: un nouvel herbicide pour le controle du Cyperus rotundus dans la canne à sucre
Year of publication : 1997

Citation : Barbe, C.; Seeruttun, S.; McIntyre, G.; Gaungoo, A.; Halosulfuron: un nouvel herbicide pour le controle du Cyperus rotundus dans la canne à sucre; 1997
Abstract : The new herbicide halosulfuron (Servian) has been evaluated as an alternative to hormone-type herbicides against Cyperus rotundus (nutgrass) in sugarcane. As a post-emergence spray at 0.02, 0.04 and 0.08 kg a.i. ha -1, halosulfuron (with an oil-based adjuvant, Complement), gave a percentage weed kill ranging between 75 to 98 percent and was superior to Actril-DS at 1.3 kg a.e. ha -1. The product was well tolerated by sugar cane except for variety R 570 in which a depressive effect was noted on young canes at the highest rate. In cane rotation land, halosulfuron at 0.08 kg a.i. ha -1 was comparable to glyphosate at 1.0 kg a.e. ha -1. Its efficacy was significantly reduced when mixed with atrazine or diuron.

Title : La plantation partiellement mécanisée de la canne à sucre à Maurice
Year of publication : 1997
Keywords : SUGARCANE; MECHANIZATION; MECHANICAL PLANTING; YIELDS; LABOUR REQUIREMENTS; MSIRI STAFF; COWA; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Seeruttun, S.; Barbe, C.; McIntyre, G.; La plantation partiellement mécanisée de la canne à sucre à Maurice; 1997
Abstract : Partially mechanized planting (PMP) consists in placing whole-stalk nursery canes in furrows before they are chopped into 50-60 cm portions, sprayed with fungicide and finally covered mechanically with soil. PMP was tested as an alternative to manual or mechanical planting in order to alleviate the problem of labour shortage. When canes are placed in the furrows with a 50 per cent overlap, the amount of planting material used in PMP and manual planting is similar. Both methods give equivalent cane yields at harvest. PMP requires 8-10 man-days per ha compared to 10 man-days and 12 woman-days for manual planting. Compared to a mechanicas (whole-stalk) planter, PMP has a faster rate of planting and uses less planting material with comparable labour input.
