Citation : Govinden, N.; Wong Yen Cheong, K.; The potato industry of Mauritius; 1989
Abstract : Potato is an important crop in Mauritius although it is much less important than sugarcane and tea, the main export crops. The development of potato production is, however, fairly recent and self-sufficient was achieved only in 1981. Presently, annual p

Title : Performance des variétés de canne à sucre aux stades finals de la sélection
Year of publication : 1991
Keywords : SUGARCANE; SELECTION; SELECTION METHODS; BREEDING; VARIETIES; MSIRI STAFF; PB; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Ricaud, C.; Domaingue, R.; Performance des variétés de canne à sucre aux stades finals de la sélection; 1991
Abstract : The agronomic performance and productivity of some promising varieties at the final stage of selection as well as some commercial varieties are reviewed. Among promising varieties, M1658/78 is the most interesting on account of its wide adaptation in different soils and climates and its high cane yield and high sucrose content. Other varieties reviewed comprise M298/71, M1236/71, M791/75, R568 and Q93. It has now been established that varieties such as M3035/66, R570 and M695/69 have a positive effect on productivity, their mean cane yield being in the order of 103 t/ha compared to 87 t/ha for older varieties like M93/48, M13/56 and M574/62. New recommendations concerning the planting and harvesting of commercial varieties are also given.

Title : The nitrogen requirements and optimum leaf nitrogen of five newly released sugar cane varieties in Mauritius
Year of publication : 1991
Keywords : SUGARCANE; VARIETIES; NITROGEN; PLANT NUTRITION; FOLIAR DIAGNOSIS; MSIRI STAFF; CHEM; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Bholah, M. A.; Gauthier, J.; Deville, J.; The nitrogen requirements and optimum leaf nitrogen of five newly released sugar cane varieties in Mauritius; 1991
Abstract : The response of five newly released sugar cane varieties to increasing rates of nitrogen (N) fertilizer (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg N/ha) were investigated in field trials laid down in the three main ecological zones in Mauritius. Varieties R570 and M3035/66 tended to respond to N rates as high as 150 kg N/ha, whereas varieties M2370/62 and M574/62 showed no response to rates higher than 50 kg N/ha. Variety M657/66 did not respond significantly beyond the 50 kg N/ha rate in sub-humid and superhumid zones but showed a significant response to the highest rate of N in the humid zone. Leaf N threshold values have been established for each variety and variety corrections calculated for application in the foliar diagnosis of nutrient status in Mauritius.

Title : Evaluation of herbicides for use in mixed cropping situation
Year of publication : 1991
Keywords : HERBICIDES; MIXED CROPPING; WEED CONTROL; SUGARCANE; WEEDS; MSIRI STAFF; COWA; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Mc Intyre, G.; Evaluation of herbicides for use in mixed cropping situation; 1991
Abstract : The use of herbicides to control weeds in mixed cropping situations is certainly better than hand-weeding. However, the products used must be selective to both crops. Before a chemical is released for use in sugar cane, it is tested in 4 different stages. Herbicides given for other crops are usually tested first in sugar cane and then in the food crop concerned. Apart from general weed control, certain herbicides are also evaluated against specific problem weeds and if they have a very long residual effect, their duration in the soil must be determined.

Title : Le maïs à l'Ile Rodrigues
Year of publication : 1991
Keywords : MAIZE; PRODUCTION; VARIETIES; YIELDS; MSIRI STAFF; FC; RODRIGUES;
Citation : Govinden, N.; Rughoo, M.; Rummun, K.; Le maïs à l'Ile Rodrigues; 1991
Abstract : Maize and rice are the main staple foods in Rodrigues. Maize is by far the most important food crop of the island but yields are low for several reasons : eroded soils, irregular and insufficient rainfall, damage caused by cyclones and susceptibility of variety to diseases. Only the traditional extensive system of production is practised. Planters grow local varieties with little or no inputs. They are faced with socio-economic constraints and numerous problems associated with the climate, soils, varieties and lack of infrastructure. In this paper, are reviewed the production and utilization of maize, constraints to production and possible solutions, and the efforts being made to develop the crop.

Title : The Mauritius maize breeding programme
Year of publication : 1985
Keywords : MAIZE; BREEDING; VARIETIES; SELECTION; MSIRI STAFF; FC; MAURITIUS;
Citation : Govinden, N.; Dintinger, J.; The Mauritius maize breeding programme; 1985
Abstract : In Mauritius there is an urgent need to increase maize production substantially in order to reduce imports. Maize is presently grown in different climatic zones. The varietal requirements of various planter groups practising different cultivation methods are examined. The short term, medium term and long term objectives of the breeding programme are discussed in relation to production systems. The modest achievements highlight the shortcomings of the programme. Corrective measures are proposed.

Abstract : Electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gel and starch was used to study enzymatic diversity in sugar cane varieties from Mauritius. THe polymorphism revealed in 7 enzymes enabled unambiguous identification of each variety in a group of some 30 clones. These clones represent the common varieties as well as promising clones. Genetic protein imprints were made. The clones of Mauritius are compared to varieties grown on large plantations in major sugar cane producing countries.
