Abstract : Mauritius suffered its most severe drought in 1999. This has resulted in a 41 per cent reduction in sugar production, with the north and west being the most affected regions. The hybridization plots have been transferred to Pamplemousses because of the hot climate which favours a better pollination. In order to accelerate the selection procedure other amendments have been made. The three most promising varieties are M 1042/86, M 1186/86 and M 1397/86. Their cane and sugar yields are quite good, but their sucrose content is fairly low to average. The newly-released varieties for 1999 are: M 1394/86, M 1400/86 and R 579. Their sucrose content is low at the beginning but improving to the end of the crop. Their sugar production is good because of their high cane yield.

Abstract : Three sugarcane varieties M 1394/86, M 1400/86 and R 579 have been released for commercial cultivation in Mauritius in early 2000. M 1394/86 is a high yielding variety with average sucrose content. M 1400/86 is adapted to a wide range of environments; it has high cane and sugar yields as well as good sucrose content in mid and late-seasons. R579 is adapted to the deep soils of the superhumid suited for mid- and late-season harvests. However, as its reaction to yellow spot disease is still being evaluated, it is provisionally recommended for cultivation only in H and L2 soils.
