Abstract : Basic and applied aspects of drip irrigating sugar cane were included in a research project initiated in 1983. The results obtained to date are presented. An acceptable soil wetting pattern has been demonstrated with 2 and 4 L/h emitters spaced at 0.75 and 1.0 apart respectively. Agronomic and economic factors must be considered with respect to dripline type and placement. A deficit irrigation water regime would lead to reasonable cane yields only when rainfall is evenly distributed. Leaf growth is the first plant process to be affected when the plant experiences water stress. Two irrigation scheduling methods have been compared as well as differences in variety response under drip.

Abstract : M 1156/69 and M292/70 were released for commercial exploitation in 1988. The three varieties are high-yielding and better suited for harvesting during the first half of the crop season. M1156/66 is specifically adapted to H, L and P soils of the lower rainfall areas. M695/69 and M292/70 are higher yielding than M1156/66 and perform well in a wide range of agro-climatic regions. However, M695/69 ought to be exploited in lower rainfall areas only because of its susceptibility to yellow spot disease and M292/70 in higher rainfall areas only because of its susceptibility to gumming disease.
